Iraqi women have started opening women-only cafes and restaurants where they can just avoid harassment. However, the women’s views are divided on whether these cafes are pockets of freedom from sexual harassment or the embodiment of segregation.
On Sunday 30th of September, the Kurdish autonomous region held an election. Voters chose from more than 700 candidates to win 111 seats in Kurdistan’s Parliament, a year after a failed independence referendum to separate from Iraq.
With neighboring Iran diverting rivers and building dams, Kurdish farmers in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq are in the midst of an already severe water crisis that threatens to get even worse, thanks to national and regional governments failing to acknowledge the urgency of the problem.
