Qayyarah resident retells stories of torture and execution under ISIS

The town and subdistrict of Qayyarah fell to ISIS in June 2014. It was reported that its recapture was of strategic importance for the upcoming offensive to take Mosul.

In August 2016, Qayyarah was fully captured by Iraqi forces, with Lieutenant General Riyadh Jiyad Tawfiq stating that they controlled all parts of the city and Prime Minister Haidar Al Abadi hailing the capture of the city as a “key step in the fight” against ISIS. This resident recounts the suffering he endured under the group, describing how they would loot, torture and execute fellow residents of the city
