Iraqi President, Barham Salih, has arrived in Erbil today in order to conduct meetings with senior officials in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). According to KRG officials, the meetings aim to resolve disputed between Baghdad and Erbil.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Interior Rebar Ahmed announced on Tuesday (September 17) that Iraqi President Barham Salih is visiting Erbil for meetings with senior officials in the Kurdistan Region.
Ahmad said that “the president will hold separate meetings with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the leadership of the Kurdistan Parliament, and Kurdistan Democratic Party leader Masoud Barzani.”
He added that relations between Erbil and Baghdad “have seen positive developments. There there is a good understanding with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi.”
Ahmed predicted that “there will be pleasant news coming soon” without providing any detail.
A scheduled visit to Baghdad by a technical working group formed to resolve disputes between the KRG and the federal government has been postponed because of visits to Erbil by Salih and a delegation led by federal Minister of Finance Fuad Hussein for talks about the 2020 budget.
This is Salih’s second official visit to Erbil since he became president.
