Leadership of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Saturday that in 10 days of fighting they have controlled four districts in Raqqa city, killed 312 ISIS militants and have captured seven ISIS Jihadists alive since the Raqqa city operation was launched on 6 June.
Moreover, 15 SDF fighters have lost their lives in the battle and 21 fighters were injured. In total, they have captured the four districts of al-Mishlab, al-Sabahiya, al-Romaniya, and Sinaa.
From the 312 dead ISIS militants, 39 bodies are in the hands of the SDF forces.
During the fighting the Kurdish-led SDF destroyed several ISIS tools such as motorcycle and car bombs, boats, mortar systems, heavy artillery and an explosive factory.
Moreover, the SDF forces seized several heavy weapons from the group, including Turkish-made weapons.
Furthermore, 4 ISIS drones were shut down by the SDF and clashes continue in areas close to the Raqqa Post Office, 23rd Street, al-Batany and the Raqqa Silos.
The Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova also confirmed ongoing fighting in Raqqa.
“Subunits of the Syrian Democratic Forces are continuing to storm the ISIS capital of Raqqa and advancing to the city from the east and the west. They have gained control of industrial areas, al-Sabahiya and parts of Hattin and al-Romania,” she said.
“Fighting is reportedly going on in the old part of the city. The southern suburbs of Raqqa, where the most ISIS forces are amassed, have not been sealed off yet,” she concluded.
This comes after the US-backed SDF troops launched a major operation to liberate the city of Raqqa from ISIS radicals. On June 6, the Syrian Democratic Forces announced the official start of the battle for Raqqa city.
Raqqa has been known as a de facto capital for the ISIS self-proclaimed Caliphate since the summer of 2014.
The Kurdish-Arab-Christian alliance of SDF has been isolating Raqqa since November 2016, when the US-backed alliance launched the so-called Euphrates Wrath Operation.
During the first phase of Euphrates Wrath, which began on November 6, 2016, the SDF liberated roughly 560 km² in Northern Raqqa.
On 10 December, 2016, the SDF launched the second phase of the Euphrates Wrath, during which it captured over 2500 km² in Western Raqqa.
On 4 February, 2017, the Syrian Democratic Forces launched the third phase of the Euphrates Wrath Operation, and liberated dozens of villages in Eastern Raqqa from ISIS jihadists.
The campaign is ultimately aimed at liberating the city of Raqqa from ISIS extremists.
