Who was ISIS chief Abu Mohammed al-Furqan?

ISIS chief Abu Mohammed al-Furqan was killed in an airstrike near the group’s de facto capital, Raqqa.

His real name was Wa’il Adel Hassan al-Fayad and was a member of the “Shurah Council” – a handful of the top members including Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the deceased Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, who was based in Aleppo and was also killed in an airstrike.

His death is a blow to ISIS; he was one of the group’s main propaganda coordinators – supervising propaganda distribution that included recorded beheadings. It comes as ISIS lose its strip on the Syria-Turkey border through which recruits would enter Syria.
