Turkey and Iraq discuss opening two new border crossings

On Tuesday, the head of the Iraqi General Authority for Border Ports, Kazim al-Aqabi, met with Turkish Ambassador to Iraq, Fatih Yildiz. The two officials discussed the reopening of the Fishkhabur and the Ovaköy border crossings by September in order to strengthen trade between the two countries.

The head of the Iraqi General Authority for Border Ports, Kazim al-Aqabi, met with Turkish Ambassador to Iraq, Fatih Yildiz, to discuss opening two new border crossings in along the countries mutual border, in order to strengthen trade between the two countries.

The Authority said in a statement on Tuesday (August 7) that the two officials discussed the opening of two border crossings at Fishkhabur and Ovaköy respectively. A provisional date for a visit by a technical team to prepare a feasibility study was set for September.

They also discussed the importance of the opening of the new crossings, which would enhance the smooth movement of commercial goods between the two countries.

The Turkish ambassador had confirmed earlier that Baghdad and Ankara would hold reciprocal visits in an effort to enhance cooperation and raised the idea of new points of entry.

This meeting is the second in that series after an initial one in June.
