Sunni tribes in Basra come together to reject sectarianism

In Basra, south Iraq, Sunni tribe representatives have come together to send a message of solidarity; one that renounces ISIS and the ideology it stems from.

“All Sunni tribes came together today to send a clear message to support the security forces, disown ISIS, terrorism and the Ba’ath party.” This was the statement made by Sheikh Rafi al-Sharifi, a Sunni religious scholar, at the gathering which was held at the military leadership head office.

Gatherings of this kind – which promote tolerance and disavow sectarianism – are essential if stability and peaceful coexistence in Iraq and indeed in other countries in the Middle East and around the world are to prevail.
