Despite three years passing since the defeat of ISIS in Sinjar, residents say that the city has not recovered from the damage. Furthermore, the struggle between the central government and the KRG has placed the city in political impasse.
Commander of the military operations in Nineveh Province, Najm al-Jabouri, has stated that the region will not fall to terrorists again. As a result, the Nineveh Operation Command has launched a large scale preemptive operation against ISIS militants in the province.
ISIS members have attempted to infiltrate the city of Samarra in the Salahuddin Province but have been thwarted by the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and the Popular Mobilisiation Units (PMU). The clashes resulted in the killing of an ISIS commander, Fathallah Ghanem al-Obeidi, along with other ISIS militants.
The Iraqi Security Forces are pushing ahead in Anbar and are clearing the remaining ISIS cells in the region. This comes in conjunction with operation "Vengeance for the Martyrs" which seeks to eliminate ISIS sleeper cells in Kirkuk, Diyala and Salahuddin Provinces.
The Iraqi Security Forces in conjunction with the Popular Mobilisation Units (PMU) have launched an operation in the Anbar desert in order to clear the area from ISIS sleeper cells that have been using the desert to launch attacks on cities.
