As Egypt's parliament works on amendments to ensure better representation of women in elected positions, the General Assembly of Egyptian Women is supporting women who want to hold local office, particularly in Upper Egypt and rural areas.
On Thursday, Iraqi parliamentarians approved the country's 111.8 billion-dollar budget. This budget is one of Iraq’s largest ever spending bills, represents nearly 45 percent increase from last year as more money has been allocated to public salaries.
The two largest Iraqi Kurdish political parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), are likely to agree eventually on a presidential candidate, but in the meantime several hats are in the ring.
Despite convening for the first time with the new members, the Iraqi Parliament was unable to achieve any of the goals on the agenda due to internal disputes on the issue of the ‘largest parliamentary bloc’. The largest bloc will be responsible for forming the new government.
In his speech at the opening session for the new Iraqi Parliament, Haider al-Abadi, who headed the previous government, stressed on the importance of focusing on development and the provision of services in the next stage, while protecting Iraq's sovereignty.
The new Iraqi parliament held its first session as rival alliances claimed to have the largest bloc at the legislature. The largest bloc holds the power of naming a few prime minister, who in turn will be tasked to form the new government of Iraq.
