Duhok – Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Units made new gains in eastern Mosul on Sunday, capturing three neighborhoods from the Islamic State (ISIS).
After fierce clashes with ISIS militants, Iraqi security forces seized control of the Adan, Mashrou al-Maa and al-Ikhaa neighborhoods.
Among the Islamic State’s casualties was Marwan Hamed Saleh al-Hayyali, the commander of eastern Mosul. He was shot dead by Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Units while trying to marshal his remaining forces.
The Iraqi Army General Command said in a statement that ISIS had suffered heavy losses in manpower and equipment during Sunday’s clashes.
On the other hand, the pro-ISIS Nineveh Media Office released a statement, saying that a jihadist had carried out a suicide attack in a Mosul suburb. Over 40 soldiers were purportedly killed and an Iraqi security installation was damaged.
Last week, Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Units swept through eastern Mosul capturing eight neighborhoods, including Malayan, al-Samah, al-Khadraa, Karkukli, al-Quds, Karama, al-Orbajiyah and al-Qadisiya al-Thaniya.
On October 17, the Iraqi Army and Kurdish Peshmerga, supported by the US-led coalition, launched a major operation to capture Mosul and its countryside.
