A leader from the armed resistance group ‘Mosul Brigades’, which is comprised mainly of students and civil servants, has spoken about the current situation inside Mosul.
“With the advent of the Iraqi Security Forces, everyone will rebel against ISIS.”
The paranoia among ISIS ranks is growing as they feel that residents will take up arms against them when the battle with the ISF ensues. This is not unlikely. The rise in resistance group activity as well as decreasing fighter morale and increasing runaways has left them less stable and more prone to rebellion.
They have attempted to tighten their grip on Mosul; deploying the religious police in more areas and increasing taxation after losing different streams of oil revenue, but there is little doubt about the organisational decline they are undergoing.
